Aaron Nola is poised to hit free agency after the 2023 campaign.

Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced that extension negotiations with the star right-hander have broken off without reaching an agreement, according to Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"We think the world of him, quality pitcher, quality human being, but sometimes you get to this point where you're not able to consummate a deal that both sides feel comfortable," Dombrowski said Saturday.

The executive hasn't completely closed the door, adding, "We're very open-minded to trying to sign him at the end of the season. We're hopeful he'll remain a Phillie for a long time."

Nola's agent, Joe Longo, echoed similar thoughts.

"We had good communication with the Phillies," Longo said in a statement. "We just couldn't agree at this time. We'll pick up the conversation again at the end of the season."

The gap between offers was significant, sources told Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

The Phillies and Nola's camp were reportedly discussing a long-term extension in mid-February. The 29-year-old said at the time that his deadline for reaching a deal was Opening Day, as he didn't want to negotiate during the season.

Nola posted a 3.25 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and 235 strikeouts over 205 innings (32 starts) in 2022, finishing fourth in NL Cy Young voting and helping the Phillies reach the World Series.
