The St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Miles Mikolas agreed to a two-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

The deal is worth $40 million, sources told Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

Mikolas, who was also named the starter for Opening Day on March 30 against the Toronto Blue Jays, would've been eligible to test free agency after the 2023 campaign.

"Miles stands among the top pitchers in the game today and has continued to provide a steady presence for us both in the rotation and inside the clubhouse," Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

The 34-year-old is coming off a strong season in 2022, posting a 3.29 ERA with 1.03 WHIP over 202 1/3 innings (32 starts) en route to being named an All-Star for the second time in his career.

Mikolas owns a 3.46 ERA with 474 strikeouts across four years with St. Louis since returning to the majors from Japan in 2018.
