New York Mets left-hander Jose Quintana has been diagnosed with a small stress fracture in one of his left ribs, the team announced Monday, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Quintana has left the team and is traveling to New York for further testing. It's not yet clear how long he'll be out or whether his status for Opening Day is in jeopardy as the Mets have yet to provide a timeline, according to Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News.

Quintana threw just one inning for the Mets on Sunday before leaving after feeling left side tightness. That start was supposed to be his final tuneup before pitching for Colombia at the World Baseball Classic. Instead, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament Sunday night before the full extent of his injury was known.

The 34-year-old joined the Mets on a two-year, $26-million contract during the winter and was expected to solidify the back end of New York's dynamic rotation. Quintana enjoyed a bounce-back 2022 campaign that saw him post career-best marks in ERA (2.93) and FIP (2.99) over 32 starts split between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals.

David Peterson, Tylor Megill, and Joey Lucchesi are all possibilities to take Quintana's rotation spot if he has to start the regular season on the injured list.
