Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday, the team announced.

The Phillies expect the 30-year-old to return as the designated hitter by the 2023 All-Star break, with a possible return to playing right field toward the end of the regular season.

Harper was diagnosed with a UCL tear last May, forcing him into a primary role as the Phillies' designated hitter.

Despite his injury, the two-time National League MVP helped lead his team to its first World Series appearance since 2009 thanks to a .286/.364/.514 slash line with 18 home runs and 65 RBIs in 99 regular-season games.

Harper impressed in the postseason, hitting .349/.414/.746 with six home runs, seven doubles, and 13 RBIs.
