New York Mets reliever Yoan Lopez has been suspended three games and fined for intentionally throwing at the Philadelphia Phillies during Sunday's game, Major League Baseball announced.

Because Lopez was optioned to Triple-A earlier Monday, his suspension will begin once he's recalled to the majors. It's unknown if he plans to appeal the discipline.

Mets manager Buck Showalter also received a one-game suspension, which he'll serve Monday when his team faces the Atlanta Braves. Bench coach Glenn Sherlock will be New York's acting manager, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

Lopez threw behind Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber, who had hit two homers earlier in the game, while the Mets held a six-run lead on Philadelphia in the top of the ninth. Umpires immediately issued warnings to both teams.

After Schwarber grounded out, Lopez hit the next batter, Alec Bohm, with an 87-mph changeup. Despite the warnings in place, Lopez wasn't ejected and summarily gave up a two-run homer to Johan Camargo before finally closing out New York's 10-6 win.

It's the second time this week Lopez has found himself in the middle of controversy. On Wednesday in St. Louis, the 29-year-old's up-and-in pitch to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado sparked a benches-clearing incident. Lopez insisted that pitch was unintentional, and he wasn't disciplined by MLB.

Lopez, who joined the Mets as a waiver claim in late March, owns a 9.00 ERA with four strikeouts in two outings this season.
