Padres add Cano on major-league deal
Cano, 39, became a free agent after the New York Mets released him on May 8. The Mets are eating around $37.5 million of his remaining money.
Cano returned to the Mets this season after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs for a second time in November 2020. However, he slashed .195/.233/.268 with one home run and three RBIs over 12 games.
The five-time Silver Slugger winner authored a .269/.315/.450 slash line with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs in 168 contests for the Mets over three campaigns since he arrived in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Mariners.
San Diego optioned right-hander Dinelson Lamet to make room on the active roster. The 29-year-old has a 9.72 ERA out of the bullpen this season after finishing fourth in 2020 NL Cy Young voting as a starter.
