The New York Mets and Eric Chavez agreed to a deal to make the former 17-year veteran the club's new hitting coach, a source told Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

The New York Yankees hired Chavez as assistant hitting coach in December. However, he was reportedly allowed to interview with the Mets because the position is considered a promotion.

The 44-year-old will replace Hugh Quattlebaum, who was interim hitting coach after the club fired Chili Davis in May.

Chavez hit 260 home runs with an .818 OPS over 1,615 games with the Oakland Athletics, Yankees, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He also won six Gold Gloves.
