Mancini, Posey named Comeback Players of the Year

Major League Baseball announced Monday that Baltimore Orioles slugger Trey Mancini and retired San Fransisco Giants catcher Buster Posey have been named Comeback Player of the Year for the American League and National League, respectively.

Mancini, 29, missed the entire 2020 campaign while undergoing treatment for colon cancer. In 2021, the first baseman hit .255/.326/.432 with 21 homers and 71 RBIs over 147 games.

Posey also missed 2020, opting out of the pandemic-shortened season while he and his wife adopted newborn twins. During a brutal 2019 for the former MVP, he hit .257/.320/.368 with seven homers and 38 RBIs over 114 games. Posey led his club this year to a resurgent 107-win season, posting an .889 OPS with 18 homers and 56 RBIs in 113 games.

Following the comeback campaign, the 34-year-old Posey announced his retirement. He's now a two-time recipient of the honor - also earning it in 2012 - and is the only Giants player to ever win the award since its inception in 2005.
