Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is playing through discomfort in his right forearm, a source told Michael Silverman and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

The issue reportedly flares up when he swings and misses at a pitch but not when he's able to make contact.

Following Thursday's Game 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, manager Alex Cora refused to verify that Devers is playing with an arm injury when he was asked about Devers dropping his bat after noncontact swings.

"A few days ago, everybody said he was setting up the pitcher whenever he drops the bat - today because he didn't get a hit, he is hurt?" Cora said. "You know, I mean, after 162 (games), things happen and you get treatment and you grind, you know? Not everybody is 100% right now, and he is posting. Like I said a few days ago, you know, he was dropping the bat the same way, and nobody said anything."

Devers has been wearing a compression sleeve that stretches above and below his elbow since Sept. 26, which came a day after striking out with an awkward swing against New York Yankees hurler Nestor Cortes, Silverman and Speier note.

For now, it doesn't appear like the injury will force the 24-year-old to miss any postseason games. Devers, who hit .279/.338/.509 with 38 home runs in the regular season, has gone 1-for-6 with three strikeouts and a pair of walks in Boston's first two playoff contests.
