San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt took leadership to a new level on Friday, wearing a 'C' on his uniform during a game against the Chicago Cubs.

"Somebody has got to step up, and when you're the alpha male on the team it's got to be you," Belt joked about the tape job. "I put the 'C' on my chest and I went to work today and thankfully it worked out."

While wearing the 'C' appeared to be a joke orchestrated by Evan Longoria, Belt went along with the gag - and it worked out in his favor. The 33-year-old went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, and a home run during a 6-1 win.

He was seen lovingly tapping the 'C' after hitting his homer in the seventh inning.

"I felt in my heart I was the captain of the team all year," Belt joked, according to The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. "I don't know if I can get much more confident than I am right now. I just made myself captain."

When Giants manager Gabe Kapler was asked if he appointed Belt as captain, the skipper provided a wise crack of his own.

"Brandon is the captain of something," he said, according to The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly.
