Mariners' Santiago suspended 80 games after testing positive for PEDs

Seattle Mariners left-hander Hector Santiago has been suspended for 80 games without pay after testing positive for exogenous testosterone under Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

This comes after the southpaw received a 10-game ban in late June after umpires determined he had a foreign substance on his glove during a game.

Santiago said he won't appeal the suspension.

"In 2020, while I was not on the roster of an MLB club, I consulted a licensed physician in Puerto Rico who diagnosed me with a condition and recommended hormonal replacement therapy," he said in a statement. "Because I did not play in 2020, I did not consider that this therapy could ultimately lead to a positive test under MLB's joint drug program.

"That said, I alone am responsible for what I put in my body, and I was not careful. Therefore I have decided to forgo my right to an appeal in this matter and accept the suspension."

Santiago had just returned from his previous suspension Tuesday, allowing one run in two innings of work against the Houston Astros.

The veteran hurler inked a minor-league contract with the Mariners in May and will now miss the rest of the season while serving his latest suspension with some of it carrying over into 2022. He was 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 26 1/3 innings with Seattle.

He will be a free agent this winter.
