New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom's most recent start lasted just three innings due to a shoulder ailment, but the two-time Cy Young winner doesn't think he suffered the injury while pitching.

"The first two innings, I felt completely fine. I think when I swung and missed up and away, I just aggravated it trying to slow the bat down and then I felt it when I was throwing," deGrom said, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

The plate appearance came in the second inning when deGrom whiffed on an offering from Chicago Cubs pitcher Robert Stock. He took the mound for the subsequent frame but was removed with a perfect game intact.

The right-hander went for an MRI following Wednesday's start and was diagnosed with shoulder soreness. As a result, the team didn't place him on the injured list.

Last year, in an attempt to avoid injuries during the pandemic-shortened 60-game season, MLB introduced the designated hitter to the National League for the first time. Though the league kept some rules from 2020, including seven-inning doubleheaders and the extra-innings baserunner, the universal DH didn't return.

DeGrom has authored a 0.54 ERA and 0.79 FIP over 67 innings this season. To his credit, he's also been very good at the plate so far, going 11-for-26 with four runs scored and six RBIs.
