Report: Cesar Hernandez returning to Indians on 1-year, $5M deal
The Cleveland Indians agreed to a one-year deal with second baseman Cesar Hernandez, sources told The Athletic's Zack Meisel.
Hernandez will make $5 million in 2021, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
The deal, which is still pending medicals, includes a club option for 2022.
The 30-year-old spent the 2020 campaign with the Indians after the first seven years of his career came with the Philadelphia Phillies.
He appeared in 58 games for Cleveland, hitting .283/.355/.408 and leading the American League with 20 doubles. He also won his first Gold Glove.
The Venezuelan infielder owns a .277/.352/.383 slash line with 133 doubles, 273 RBIs, and 80 steals throughout his career.
Cleveland apparently isn't done making moves after re-signing Hernandez; the team has "more irons in the free-agent fire," according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.
It's been a busy offseason for an Indians front office that already traded star shortstop Francisco Lindor and reliable starter Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets at the beginning of January.
