The New York Mets are in active talks with free-agent catcher James McCann, sources told FanSided's Robert Murray.

A deal is not close, but it appears increasingly likely that McCann will receive a four-year contract, Murray adds.

New York needs a new starting backstop and the club prefers McCann to star catcher J.T. Realmuto, Andy Martino of SNY reports.

McCann has several suitors, but the Mets are among the teams most involved in negotiations with the 2019 All-Star, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels, and Philadelphia Phillies have also reportedly shown interest this winter.

The 30-year-old slashed .289/.360/.536 with seven home runs in 31 games for the White Sox in 2020.
