Red Sox quarantine Taiwanese prospect to guard against coronavirus

The Boston Red Sox are being extra cautious during spring training and have quarantined Taiwanese prospect Chih-Jung Liu in a hotel room to guard against the coronavirus, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.

Liu confirmed on his Facebook page that he's been quarantined since arriving from Taiwan last week. He's being delivered three meals a day, doing weight training, and going for occasional runs, Abraham adds.

The Red Sox admitted they're using "an overabundance of caution" with Liu because of the worldwide concern about the coronavirus, a team spokesperson told Abraham.

The club briefly quarantined fellow Taiwanese player Tzu-Wei Lin earlier this month, but only for a day.

The 20-year-old Liu signed a $750,000 contract with the Red Sox last October and has yet to appear in a professional game with the team.

Liu, a former two-way player, is expected to pitch for the Red Sox organization, and plans are for him to join his teammates by the weekend.
