The Boston Red Sox need to pay more of Wil Myers' contract if they want to trade Mookie Betts to the San Diego Padres.

San Diego is willing to send Myers, two young major-league players, and at least one prospect to the Red Sox for Betts, sources told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Among the Padres players considered are outfielders Manuel Margot and Josh Naylor, and one of Cal Quantrill or Joey Lucchesi.

However, San Diego wants the Red Sox to pay around 75% of the $61 million owed to Myers over the next three years, as Betts is owed $27 million this season. Boston is willing to cover only half of Myers' contract, though.

The Padres' insistence on paying less of Myers' deal stems from an organizational belief that the addition of only Betts - who's set to hit free agency following the upcoming campaign - isn't enough to make San Diego a contender this year.

Boston is reportedly weighing trade offers for the 2018 American League MVP from the Los Angeles Dodgers in addition to the Padres.
