Trout beats out Bregman to claim 3rd AL MVP
For the third time in his nine-year career, Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout has been named the American League Most Valuable Player, as voted upon by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Trout beat out Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman and Oakland Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien - who finished second and third, respectively - among others.
Player | Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mike Trout | LAA | 17 | 13 | 355 | |
Alex Bregman | HOU | 13 | 17 | 335 | |
Marcus Semien | OAK | 22 | 228 | ||
DJ LeMahieu | NYY | 6 | 178 | ||
Xander Bogaerts | BOS | 1 | 147 |
Trout, who also won the award in 2014 and 2016, is the 11th player in MLB history to win three MVPs.
He joins Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Alex Rodriguez, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella, Mike Schmidt, Albert Pujols, and Barry Bonds as a three-time winner.
Bonds is the all-time record holder with seven MVP awards.
"Mike is a one-of-a-kind player," Angels manager Joe Maddon said in a statement, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. "There is no comparison that I've seen since 1981, when I began as a coach, manager, and scout.
"His complete skill set is generational and stands up to every era that participated in our game. He is the player I would recommend be required watching by all youngsters who want to become a major leaguer. Be like Mike!"
Trout slashed .291/.438/.645 with 45 home runs, 104 RBIs, and 110 walks in 134 games, including a league-leading 1.083 OPS. He missed time near the end of the season after undergoing right-foot surgery.
