Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost announced Monday he will retire at the end of the 2019 season.

"With the development of our young players and our returning veterans, I feel and hope the worst is behind us in this rebuilding phase of our organization," Yost said in a statement. "My plan all along was to get us through the rough times then turn it over to a new manager the rest of the way.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here as your manager and will never forget the good and the hard times we had together as an organization and a fan base."

Yost, 65, ends his tenure as the winningest skipper in franchise history, currently sitting at 744 regular-season victories with five games remaining. He's managed the club since May 13, 2010, taking over for Trey Hillman.

Under Yost's watch, the Royals made back-to-back World Series appearances in 2014 and 2015, winning in the latter year against the New York Mets. Yost and Co. ended Kansas City's lengthy 28-year playoff drought by reaching the postseason in 2014.

Prior to his career with the Royals, Yost managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003-08 and served as a coach with the Atlanta Braves from 1991-2002.
