D-Backs' Marte out for remainder of season with stress reaction in back
The Arizona Diamondbacks will play the remainder of the season without Ketel Marte, as the breakout star has a stress reaction in his back, general manager Mike Hazen said, according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
Marte, 25, will not require surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training.
The switch-hitting infielder cemented himself as one of the premier second basemen in baseball, authoring a .329/.389/.592 slash line with 32 home runs and 10 stolen bases over 144 games. Marte accrued 7.1 WAR, according to FanGraphs, which ranks first among qualified second basemen.
Marte last appeared in a game on Sept. 17 and was generating down-ballot MVP consideration. Among qualified National League hitters, Marte ranks fourth by FanGraphs WAR behind Christian Yelich, Cody Bellinger, and Anthony Rendon.
