Indians' Ramirez placed on IL with hand fracture

The Cleveland Indians placed third baseman Jose Ramirez on the injured list with a fractured hamate bone in his right hand, the club announced Sunday.

Ramirez will have surgery on Monday in New York and the team will know more regarding his timeline after that, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

He left Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals in the first inning after a foul tip, and the two-time All-Star had an MRI on his wrist after experiencing discomfort, according to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com.

Indians manager Terry Francona disclosed following the contest that Ramirez was already dealing with wrist soreness, but his most recent injury was a bigger issue, according to Castrovince.

On Sunday, Francona said there are a few ways his club can move forward in light of the news.

"You can feel sorry for yourself, which probably doesn't end well," He said, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic. "Or you can choose to fight back and feel like this is our time to shine.

"And I would choose No. 2. I'm aware that it got more difficult. We lost a great player. That doesn't mean you can't win. Just makes it a little harder."

Ramirez, 26, has finished third in AL MVP voting the last two seasons, and his second-half surge has helped the Indians catch the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central. He owns a .327/.363/.705 slash line after the All-Star break and his 17 extra-base hits in August are tied with Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox for tops in the majors.

Cleveland recalled infielder Yu Chang from Triple-A Columbus to fill the open spot on the 25-man roster.
