The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first National League club of 2019 to reach the 80-win plateau on Tuesday, missing out on becoming the first team in MLB by mere moments.

The New York Yankees collected their 80th victory less than one hour earlier.

It's the third time in history the two teams have reached their 80th win on the same night, previously doing so in 1947 and 1953, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Dodgers lost to the Yankees in the World Series in both of those seasons.

The Yankees toppled the Baltimore Orioles to improve to 80-41 on Domingo German's MLB-leading 16th victory in a game that ended at 9:46 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers, who now have an identical record to the Yankees, blew out the Miami Marlins, as rookie starter Dustin May collected the first victory of his career. Their contest ended at 10:32 p.m. ET.

The 1947 World Series - played between the Yankees and then-Brooklyn Dodgers - went the full seven games, with the Bronx Bombers outscoring their NL counterpart 38-29 and Joe Page earning the Game 7 victory.

Six years later, the two clubs met again, with the Yankees needing only six games to beat Brooklyn. Vin Scully, at 25 years old, became the youngest person to ever broadcast a World Series game that year.

Since then, the two clubs have met in the Fall Classic six times (1955, 1956, 1963, 1977, 1978, 1981).

In the event history repeats itself in 2019, it would be the first championship for the Yankees since 2009 and third consecutive season the Dodgers have made the World Series and lost.
