The Diamondbacks are designating three-time All-Star closer Greg Holland for assignment, the team announced Wednesday. In a corresponding move, Arizona reinstated Blake Swihart from the 60-day injured list.

Arizona now has seven days to place Holland on waivers, release him, or outright him to the minors. If outrighted, he can reject the assignment and become a free agent.

Holland joined the D-Backs on a $3.25-million deal in the offseason and got off to a strong start while working as the team's closer. But his performance has cratered of late; since the beginning of July, he owns an 11.42 ERA, has surrendered more walks (11) than strikeouts (nine), and has blown three of his eight save opportunities.

Manager Torey Lovullo removed Holland from the closer role on July 28.

The 33-year-old Holland was named American League Reliever of the Year in 2014 and earned NL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2017.
