Report: 'Pretty high' chance Mets trade Wheeler

Zack Wheeler's time in Queens appears to be running out.

The chances the right-hander won't be with the New York Mets following the July 31 trade deadline are "pretty high," a team source told Yahoo Sports' Mike Mazzeo.

"It's just where we're at," the source disclosed. "If we played better in San Francisco (over the weekend), it might have changed everything."

Wheeler is making his way back from right shoulder fatigue that landed him on the injured list in mid-July, a development that has reportedly caused some concern within the organization regarding the impending free agent's trade value.

The 29-year-old is expected to start versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday and is trying to downplay swirling rumors in the meantime.

"I mean, last year was the same way," Wheeler said of the trade speculation. "You try to just go out there and get a win and concentrate on that. I'm here now, so I'm not worried about that."

The 2009 sixth overall pick has reportedly drawn interest from the New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, and Tampa Bay Rays. The Boston Red Sox were also rumored to be eyeing the starting pitcher but have already acquired right-hander Andrew Cashner from the Baltimore Orioles.

New York (45-54) looks primed to be a deadline seller due to an underwhelming campaign. After losing three of four in their weekend series against the San Francisco Giants, the Mets enter Tuesday's action 14 games out of first in the National League East and seven games back of a wild-card spot.
