Sanchez becomes 1st starter since '04 to lose 9 straight in same season
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez is in the midst of the roughest stretch of his career.
After another rough outing Friday night against the New York Yankees, Sanchez became the first pitcher since Sidney Ponson in 2004 to lose nine straight starts in a single season.
It also matches a Blue Jays franchise record for consecutive games lost. Jeff Byrd (1977) and Juan Berenguer (1981) are the only other Toronto pitchers to lose nine straight, according to TSN.
Dating back to May 2, Sanchez is 0-12 over 14 starts, including a pair of no-decisions.
The last starter to lose eight straight in a season is Kevin Slowey in 2011. The all-time, single-season record belongs to Roy Moore and Hugh Mulcahy who each lost 12 straight starts in 1920 and 1940, respectively.
Lum Harris registered 13 straight losses in 1943, but two of those came in relief appearances.
Sanchez's outing on Friday started relatively well. He got through four scoreless innings before the wheels fell off in the fifth and the Yankees plated four runs.
With the loss, Sanchez is now 3-13 on the season with a 6.22 ERA in 97 innings.
