Report: Padres evaluating Tigers' Boyd as potential trade target

The San Diego Padres appear to be doing some homework on Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd with the trade deadline fast approaching.

Serious talks between the two clubs have yet to occur but the Padres are evaluating Boyd as a potential trade possibility, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB.com.

San Diego is trying to acquire a controllable starting pitcher before July 31 or during the upcoming offseason, Morosi notes. The team has reportedly asked the New York Mets about right-hander Noah Syndergaard.

Detroit, meanwhile, is believed to prefer at least one potential All-Star in return for Boyd, who is under team control through the 2022 season. It was reported in late June that the Tigers wanted multiple impact prospects for the 28-year-old.

The Houston Astros are also apparently interested in Boyd but are unwilling to include top outfield prospect Kyle Tucker in a potential trade.

The Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Tampa Bay Rays are also interested in the starting pitcher's services, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports.

Boyd is in the midst of a breakout campaign, as he's pitched to a 3.87 ERA through the first half of the season and is striking out 11.9 batters per nine over 107 innings for the Tigers.
