Report: Cubs looking into sportsbook venue at Wrigley Field
The Chicago Cubs have considered opening a sportsbook at Wrigley Field and locations just outside the ballpark, sources told ESPN's David Purdum.
Along with other Chicago-based professional franchises, the Cubs are exploring the possibility of adding betting windows, automated kiosks, and a sportsbook venue, according to Purdum.
However, discussions are reportedly still in a preliminary stage.
"Pen hasn't hit paper yet," a source told Purdum.
MLB doesn't allow sportsbooks inside of stadiums but is reviewing new legislation in Illinois and determining how it could change those principles.
"We will work with our clubs to explore the opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving sports betting landscape in a socially responsible manner," an MLB spokesperson said in a statement obtained by ESPN.
The state's legislature passed a bill on June 2 that authorizes regulated sports betting. That includes permitting sports facilities with a seating capacity greater than 17,000 to apply for a license for betting inside or within a five-block radius of the venues.
The bill is awaiting the signature of Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
