Angels designate former closer Allen for assignment
The Cody Allen experiment is officially over for the Los Angeles Angels.
L.A. designated the former closer for assignment Saturday, the team announced, ending its relationship with the 30-year-old right-hander. Allen signed a one-year, $8.5-million contract with the club during the offseason.
After learning he'd been designated for assignment, Allen said he's not calling it quits anytime soon but admitted that he thinks he's lost his identity as a pitcher, according to Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times.
The veteran reliever came to the Angels with 153 saves - all with the Cleveland Indians - on his resume, but he couldn't find his groove on the West Coast.
Allen fashioned a 6.26 ERA, 1.91 WHIP, and a disastrous 8.33 FIP with four saves during 23 innings across 25 appearances.
He was placed on the injured list at the end of April with a lumbar spine strain, but his numbers only got worse upon his return.

While most of his stats were an eyesore, he still authored a K/9 rate of 11.35, according to FanGraphs.
In a corresponding move, the Angels recalled right-hander Taylor Cole from Triple-A.
