The Oakland Athletics announced that Stephen Piscotty underwent successful surgery on Thursday to remove a melanoma from his right ear.

The melanoma was discovered during a routine spot check with dermatologist Dr. Joseph Chao, who identified a suspicious mole in the outfielder's ear. A subsequent biopsy revealed the mole was positive for melanoma, a type of cancer that develops from pigment-containing cells in the skin.

Piscotty is resting at home and will be evaluated daily. He's expected to rejoin the Athletics within the next week.

Over 65 games this season, the 28-year-old is hitting .250/.314/.400 with eight home runs and two stolen bases.
