The New York Yankees are inching closer to full strength, with shortstop Didi Gregorius taking his next step toward returning from injury.

Gregorius will start a rehab assignment at Class-A Tampa on Saturday, according to Mark Didtler of The Associated Press.

Gregorius, a free agent after the season, hasn't played in 2019 after undergoing offseason Tommy John surgery. He only just started playing extended spring training games, logging four appearances this week.

Entering his rehab assignment, the veteran says his hitting is behind his fielding.

"My timing is not there yet," Gregorius said. "But defensively I’m good. Arm and everything feels good."

If he gets through the assignment without an issue, Gregorius could rejoin the major-league club in June. Position players are eligible to spend up to 20 days on a rehab assignment.

Gregorius emerged as a valuable piece in the Yankees' offensive arsenal over the last three seasons after primarily being viewed as a glove-first infielder to start his career. Since the beginning of the 2016 campaign, Gregorius has hit .277/.319/.472 with 72 home runs, 82 doubles, and 243 RBIs.
