Doolittle takes latest Nats loss to heart: 'I'm disgusted with myself'
Nothing is going right for the Washington Nationals.
Following a team meeting - which was called to address the handling of tough situations - before Wednesday's showdown with the New York Mets, the Nationals' bullpen coughed up six runs in the final two innings to lose 6-1 to their division rival.
Closer Sean Doolittle, who was brought in during the eighth to try to hold the lead with two runners on base, had one of the worst outings of his career and expressed his disappointment postgame.
"It's really frustrating. I'm disgusted with myself," Doolittle said, according to MASN's Mark Zuckerman.
Doolittle hit Carlos Gomez with a pitch, allowed a bases-clearing double to Juan Lagares, and gave up a three-run home run to Rajai Davis.
"It's shocking ... " manager Dave Martinez said of his veteran reliever's performance. "He's the best."
After starter Max Scherzer tossed six scoreless innings on four hits, Washington's relievers gave up three hits and walked two.
The Nationals' bullpen entered Wednesday with an MLB-worst 6.61 ERA.
Washington has lost four straight and is 19-30 on the season.
