Is Donald Trump a good-luck charm for the Boston Red Sox? The president certainly seems to think so.

The defending World Series champions swept the Seattle Mariners over the weekend following their customary visit to the White House on Thursday. Trump was clearly paying attention, and on Monday took credit for Boston's run:

Whether it was the White House effect or simply the continuation of what was already a red-hot May - they're 9-2 since the month began - the Red Socks Sox certainly had a bounce in their step over the weekend. Alex Cora's men outscored Seattle 34-8 across three contests and moved within three games of first-place Tampa Bay as a result.

Boston's White House visit was not without some controversy, as multiple members of the team - including Cora and reigning AL MVP Mookie Betts - skipped the trip, prompting the manager to refute rumors of a possible divide in the clubhouse.

While Trump didn't highlight any individual performances, the Red Sox were helped to the weekend sweep by players who went to the White House and those who did not. Slugger J.D. Martinez, who attended, ripped a pair of homers against the Mariners. Third baseman Rafael Devers, who stayed home, went 9-for-14 with seven RBIs.
