Miguel Andujar's return from injury appears to be much closer than initially anticipated.

The New York Yankees third baseman, who's played just three games this season due to a labrum tear in his right shoulder, will begin a rehab assignment Friday at extended spring training, manager Aaron Boone announced, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Andujar is expected to play four-to-five innings at third base Friday. If everything goes according to plan, Boone believes that the 24-year-old could resume his season with the Yankees within a week.

A possible May return is a remarkable turn of events for Andujar, the runner-up in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season. When he first hurt his shoulder at the end of March, the Yankees feared that he might need season-ending surgery.

New York has been hit hard by injuries during the early portion of 2019. Fifteen different Yankees have spent time on the injured list so far this season and 13 players are currently sidelined.

Andujar isn't the only injured Yankee who's on the road to recovery. Veteran shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, currently sidelined by a calf strain, is expected to begin his rehab assignment at some point next week, Boone said, according to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic.
