After setting Opening Day as the deadline for an extension with the New York Mets, Jacob deGrom says he's growing less optimistic about a deal getting done in time, according to Tim Healey of Newsday.

"You see guys signing,” deGrom said. "I see them too. I guess we wait."

Justin Verlander, Chris Sale, Blake Snell, Aaron Nola, Miles Mikolas, and Luis Severino are among the pitchers who have recently agreed to new deals.

The right-hander is still engaged in talks with his club, but it's looking less likely that an extension will be reached before the season starts on March 28.

"I don’t know where it’s going to end up," deGrom said. "I’ve really not been trying to think about it. Yeah, I said I wanted to get something done, but it’s getting close to Opening Day and I think my focus is on that right now."

If an extension is not agreed upon before the start of the campaign and talks do break off, the two sides will have another offseason to come to terms on a new deal. The reigning NL Cy Young winner isn't set to hit free agency until after the 2020 season.
