Report: Nationals, Braves not 'in' on Kimbrel

With MLB's traditional Opening Day less than three weeks away, it remains unclear which team will sign free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel.

The Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves were reportedly interested in the 30-year-old, but both teams are no longer "in" on him, multiple sources told Jim Bowden of The Athletic.

Reports surfaced Tuesday that the Nationals are unwilling to give Kimbrel a deal that would push the team's payroll above the luxury-tax threshold again; Washington was penalized in 2017 and 2018.

Although MLB's active saves leader helped the Boston Red Sox win the World Series last season, the team appears to be ready to move on from him.

The Philadelphia Phillies also reportedly showed interest in Kimbrel this winter. Following Bryce Harper's megadeal, however, they are now unlikely to sign the closer unless he's willing to accept a short-term contract.

Kimbrel's agent, David Meter, refuted an "utterly false" report earlier this month that the seven-time All-Star would consider sitting out the whole season if his contract demands weren't met. Reports emerged in December that Kimbrel was looking to land a deal worth more than $100 million over six years.

Kimbrel has registered 333 saves in his prolific career, playing for the Red Sox, Braves, and San Diego Padres. The 2011 National League Rookie of the Year has a 1.91 ERA and 868 strikeouts in 532 2/3 innings in the majors.
