Blue Jays fire hitting coach Brook Jacoby, 1st-base coach Tim Leiper

The coaching changes continue for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ten days following the announcement that Charlie Montoyo would become the 13th manager of the Blue Jays, the team fired hitting coach Brook Jacoby and first-base coach Tim Leiper, general manager Ross Atkins told John Lott of The Athletic.

Jacoby had been with the club since the 2015 season, while Leiper joined Toronto before the 2014 campaign.

Jacoby, 58, spent part of the 2006 season as the hitting coach of the Texas Rangers before ultimately earning a full-time job in the same role with the Cincinnati Reds a year later. He remained in the Reds organization until 2013.

The Philadelphia, Pa. native coached one of the most prolific offenses in baseball in 2015, but Toronto saw a significant downturn last year, hitting .244/.312/.427 collectively.

The 52-year-old Leiper spent 12 seasons in the minor leagues, mostly with the Detroit Tigers organization, before coaching Team Canada in the 2004 Summer Olympics and the World Baseball Classic in 2006, 2009, and 2013. The Whittier, Calif. product also had coaching stints with the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the then-Florida Marlins. He signed on with the Blue Jays in a player development role in 2013 and took over as first-base coach the following year.

While Lott notes the search for a new hitting coach has already begun, it is unclear who will replace Jacoby and Leiper under Montoyo.
