Shohei Ohtani threw an important bullpen session on Wednesday, taking another step toward returning as a starting pitcher.

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the two-way star threw off the mound at nearly maximum effort, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. To help the club gather information, Ohtani stood on the game mound at Angel Stadium for the bullpen session, making it possible to measure Statcast data.

The Angels are in the midst of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. After the bullpen session, Ohtani rejoined the team, continuing to play as a hitter.

Ohtani was placed on the disabled list in early June with a Grade 2 UCL sprain in his throwing elbow. He was activated in early July and used as the team's designated hitter.

In 32 games, including 21 starts, Ohtani is slashing .247/.327/.505 with six home runs since his return. Against San Diego, in a National League park, Ohtani has been limited to pinch-hitting duties.
