Steven Souza Jr. is scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday after the Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder strained his shoulder while attempting to make a diving catch during Wednesday's spring game against the San Francisco Giants.

"You expect him to get up from those things," manager Torey Lovullo told Richard Morin of azcentral. "When he doesn't, you kind of hold your breath a little bit. You're worried when you run out there.

"By the time I got out there, I think there was a lot of discomfort and I could see that. It was a no-brainer for me to get him off the field."

Souza was not given an X-ray following the game, though Lovullo told reporters he was informed there were no broken bones. The Diamondbacks' skipper was non-committal on a recovery timetable but added they would know more following the MRI.

Lovullo added that Arizona is "built for this," and has Jarrod Dyson, Yasmany Tomas, Chris Owings, or Chris Herrmann capable of filling in at right field, with David Peralta and A.J. Pollock as the likely left fielder and center fielder, respectively, on Opening Day.

The 28-year-old Souza was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a three-way trade involving the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees after J.D. Martinez signed with the Boston Red Sox. Arizona shipped Brandon Drury to the Yankees and Anthony Banda to the Rays.

Souza is coming off of an impressive season at the plate, posting career highs in home runs (30), on-base percentage (.351), and slugging (.459). The new recruit was 6-for-27 with a pair of home runs in spring training.
