Teams will know by early next week at the latest whether they'll have a shot at signing Shohei Ohtani, as the players' association has set a Monday deadline for Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball to resolve the international posting issue, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

On Wednesday evening, a report surfaced that suggested the MLBPA would block the league's proposed system.

MLB expected a posting framework to be approved by early December. There was some conjecture it would be similar to the old system, which entailed MLB teams bidding up to $20 million for the right to negotiate with a player, with all of that money going to the foreign team.

Commissioner Rob Manfred spoke with the media on Thursday and said he remained "hopeful the union will find a way to get on board and open that player market up," according to Heyman.

Whether the players' union setting a deadline expedites the process remains to be seen. The MLBPA believes the old system is unfair to stars like Ohtani, as his former club could receive more money than the player himself.
