Matheny told ump 'nobody is here to watch him' after 9th-inning ejection

Mike Matheny has an idea of what fans want. He doesn't believe umpire Chris Segal is on the list, though.

In the ninth inning of the St. Louis Cardinals' eventual 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, Matheny was incensed by Segal's decision to call for time during reliever John Brebbia's delivery. As he stepped in between the home-plate umpire and his backstop Yadier Molina, Matheny argued his case but was quickly tossed for his troubles.

The Cardinals skipper was insistent on getting his money's worth, however, and he admitted postgame he had some choice words for Segal before finally leaving the field.

"I told him nobody is here to watch him," Matheny said, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. "What we're trying to do is get (Brebbia) to hold the ball. He shuts down the running game and it also makes it very difficult on the hitter. ... The umpire doesn't need to have a break.

"That's the first I've ever heard of it. And when he told me that, that was what pushed me over the edge."

Despite the hostilities, Brebbia did manage to finish the at-bat, getting Red Sox infielder Eduardo Nunez to pop up in foul ground. He couldn't secure the final out for the Cardinals, however, as Mookie Betts would then smack a double off the Green Monster to score both Chris Young and Jackie Bradley Jr., giving Boston the walk off.
