Marlins president hasn't spoken to Jeter-led group about trading Stanton

Miami Marlins president David Samson doesn't appear motivated to deal away one of baseball's most prominent sluggers.

In the midst of persistent speculation involving outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins executive said Wednesday he hasn't discussed any trade scenarios with Derek Jeter's ownership group, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.

When asked about Stanton's future with the team, Samson said directly: "If he stays healthy, we're talking about the Marlins' first Hall of Famer."

Samson's stance contradicted an earlier report that the Marlins were willing to engage in trade talks for the four-time All-Star who currently leads baseball with 44 home runs - on pace to finish with 60.

Meanwhile, with the prospective sale of the Marlins to Jeter's group pending league approval, Samson said he expects it to be finalized in the first week of October, per Nightengale. Jeter's group, also consisting of venture capitalist Bruce Sherman, agreed to purchase the Marlins for a reported $1.2 billion from current owner Jeffrey Loria this past weekend.
