Report: Marlins 'willing to engage' in Stanton trade talks

The Miami Marlins appear to be open to the idea of dealing superstar slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

The four-time All-Star and major-league home run leader cleared trade waivers Sunday, and the Marlins are "willing to engage" with other teams on trade talks involving Stanton, one source told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

It was reported earlier this week that four teams have inquired about him, though Morosi states that the Marlins aren't involved in any serious trade talks.

Formulating a trade for Stanton comes with no shortage of obstacles, especially when considering prospective clubs would likely want to make a deal prior to the Sept. 1 deadline if they want him to be eligible for the playoffs.

In addition to that shrinking window, there's also the fact that he's owed $295 million in salary through 2028, though he does have an opt-out in his contract following 2020. The Marlins are also set to go through an ownership change, with Jeffrey Loria selling the club to a group led by Derek Jeter. The deal is pending approval.

While rumors continue to swirl around his future, Stanton continues to be the hottest hitter in the majors. He's already hit a career-high 44 homers this season, with blasts coming in six consecutive games.

The 27-year-old has spent his entire eight-year career with the Marlins.
