Report: Athletics agree to deal with Chris Carter

Adam Hunger / USA TODAY Sports

It took just two weeks for Chris Carter to find a new employer after being released by the New York Yankees, with the Oakland Athletics agreeing to a minor-league deal with the first baseman, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Carter was cut by the Yankees after hitting 27 percent worse than the league average by wRC+ through 62 games. Despite being known for his power, Carter hit just eight home runs and was slugging an abysmal .370.

The 30-year-old agreed to a one-year deal with the Yankees worth $3.5 million after leading the National League in home runs (41) with the Milwaukee Brewers last season.

It was believed that, along with the Athletics, the Texas Rangers were among the front-runners to sign Carter following his release.

The plan for Carter is to start with Oakland's Triple-A affiliate in Nashville.

Carter began his career with the Athletics, playing his first three seasons with the team. Over that span, he posted a .214/.310/.425 slash line over 106 games.

The addition of Carter gives the Athletics the flexibility to trade everyday first baseman Yonder Alonso, whose name continues to show up in rumors. Interestingly, Carter's former team - the Yankees - have most recently been tied to acquiring Alonso.
