Report: Yankees remain favorites to land Gray after Garcia deal

Cary Edmondson / USA TODAY Sports

You know what they say: You can never have too much starting pitching.

The New York Yankees remain the favorites to land Oakland Athletics starter Sonny Gray, even after trading for lefty Jaime Garcia early Sunday morning, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

The Yankees sent pitching prospects Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns to Minnesota, with the Twins picking up the majority of Garcia's remaining salary. (Yes, that's right, the Yankees received money from the Twins in the deal.)

Gray was scheduled to start Sunday, but Oakland shuffled its rotation Saturday, the club announced. Gray's now scheduled to pitch Monday - provided he's still a member of the Athletics, which appears more doubtful by the minute.

The 27-year-old has a 3.43 ERA and 1.18 WHIP this season in 16 starts and 97 innings, and would bolster what is already a strong Yankees rotation.

Gray's earning $3.575 million this season and is under club control through 2019.

The non-waiver trade deadline is set for 4 p.m. ET on Monday.
