Boston Red Sox television analyst Jerry Remy underwent surgery to treat lung cancer and is recovering in hospital.

The surgery for the 64-year-old "went well," according to a post from his Twitter account on Monday.

Remy announced June 12 that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer for a fifth time and would need to have a piece of his lung removed. He was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008.

''It's obviously disappointing to me, but it's something that I've been through a number of times,'' Remy said two weeks ago, according to The Associated Press. ''It has not spread. It's located in one spot and surgery will remove it. There'll be a recovery time after surgery.''

The popular broadcaster drew a standing ovation from the crowd at Fenway Park on Sunday after receiving a heartfelt message on the video board.
