PSG report 3 more COVID-19 cases, casting doubt over Ligue 1 opener

Three more Paris Saint-Germain players contracted COVID-19, the club confirmed Thursday, bringing the team's total number of cases to six.

The players, who weren't identified, are "following the appropriate health measures," PSG said in a statement.

It's unclear whether Ligue 1 will postpone PSG's first game of the new season against Lens on Sept. 10. Any team in the French top flight with four or more active cases in an eight-day period must cancel training, according to France 24.

Under the provision, upcoming matches could also be postponed.

Earlier this week, Neymar, Angel Di Maria, and Leandro Paredes reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. They had recently returned from holidays on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

A number of French clubs have reported positive results in recent weeks, including Marseille, Lyon, and Stade Rennes. Marseille's first match of the season was pushed back because of an outbreak within the first team.

France's national team has also been hit hard. Paul Pogba and Tanguy Ndombele were forced to withdraw with the virus, and goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was sent home Thursday after testing positive for the second time in three weeks.

Tests are being conducted on players as they return from vacation. Anyone who has the disease must self-isolate for 14 days.
