Ligue 2 game halted as player concussed after fan attack
Rodez's trip to Bordeaux in the French second-tier on Friday was stopped definitively after just 23 minutes when the visitors' Lucas Buades was left concussed after being attacked by a home fan.
Midfielder Buades was celebrating his goal which put his side 1-0 up when he was hit by a pitch-invading Bordeaux supporter.
"The elements are convincing, the player can't continue to play the game as he's concussed," referee Nicolas Rainville told reporters.
"We have respected the rules, and the game will not restart," he added.
Going into the final round of the Ligue 2 season held on Friday, Bordeaux had hopes of returning to Ligue 1 while Rodez were eyeing to stay in the second division.
Following the referee's decision, France's Professional Football League (LFP) said it would convene a meeting of a disciplinary commission on Monday to study the next steps.
"The LFP strongly condemns this act of violence towards a player and wishes Lucas Buades a prompt recovery," it said in a statement.
