Hamilton out of Sakhir GP after testing positive for COVID-19

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton won't race in the Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain after testing positive for COVID-19, F1 announced Tuesday.

Hamilton acknowledged in an Instagram post that he developed symptoms Monday overnight after racing in the Bahrain Grand Prix, which took place at the same track that will host Sunday's event.

"I'm devastated that I won't be racing this weekend," the 35-year-old wrote. "Since we started the season in June, my team and I have been taking all the precautions we possibly can and following the regulations everywhere we've been in order to stay safe.

"Unfortunately, even though I returned three negative results this past week, I woke up yesterday morning with mild symptoms and requested another test which came back positive. I've immediately gone into self-isolation for 10 days."

Mercedes has yet to name a replacement for Hamilton.

Racing Point teammates Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll are the only other drivers outside of Hamilton to test positive during the 2020 racing season.
