Barcelona received a massive boost on the eve of their Champions League group stage opener, as Lionel Messi has been declared fit.

Messi has been included in Barcelona's 22-man squad for Tuesday's match against Borussia Dortmund after recovering from a calf injury that's prevented him from playing this season.

The Argentinian superstar, who suffered the injury during preseason training, received the green light to travel to Germany after taking part in Monday's final training session in Catalonia.

It remains unclear what kind of role Messi will play given manager Ernesto Valverde's previous insistence on exercising caution in re-integrating the 32-year-old into the squad.

Goalkeeper Neto was also cleared to play following hand surgery.

Barcelona sit fifth in La Liga with seven points after four matches.
