Koeman weighs up potential Diego Costa loan deal

Chelsea's unwanted striker Diego Costa has his heart set on a return to Spain after being deemed surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte, but he could make a short stop on Merseyside before the turn of the year.

Costa, who has made no secret of his desire to return to a transfer-banned Atletico Madrid in January, has opted to remain away instead of returning to training with Chelsea and has been fined £300,000 by the Blues as a result. A move back to Spain isn't possible this summer, but a short-term loan at another club first might be the right solution for both parties.

Manager Ronald Koeman fielded a vague question regarding further signings for his side after the Toffees completed a £45-million club-record move for Gylfi Sigurdsson and the Dutch manager entertained the possibility when asked if he was considering a "permanent or temporary" option.

"Is this about Costa?" Koeman posed to reporters, as quoted by Sky Sports.

"Of course you like to sign players for the future, but if you can get the best one that way, then why not?"

"That's for six months, the season, two years.

"It's difficult because it needs to be a quality player, or a young player who can develop or improve.

"We have the possibility maybe to sign good players, but we don't play in the Champions League - and that sometimes makes things very difficult."
