A man who attempted an armed robbery of Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac in July was jailed for 10 years at London's Harrow Crown Court on Friday.

Ashley Smith, 30, admitted he attempted to steal watches worth £200,000 from the players with the help of 26-year-old accomplice Jordan Northover. The attackers were traveling on a stolen moped and carrying knives.

Northover is set to be sentenced at a later date.

Judge Ian Bourne QC described Smith as a prolific "career criminal," according to BBC News. He was out on license from a 42-month sentence for a burglary attempt of the same Arsenal players in 2017.

The court heard that Smith and Northover didn't anticipate Kolasinac fighting back when they tried to rob the footballers on July 25. Videos of the incident went viral after the Arsenal left-back bravely stood his ground despite Smith and Northover, wearing helmets and dark clothing designed to conceal their identities, brandishing weapons.

Kolasinac was then able to get into the car, which was driven away by Ozil.

"But that was not the end of it," the judge said, as quoted by PA Media. "The two men pursued the car along the high road and attempted to stop the vehicle, throwing stones at the car."

The vehicle, which was also carrying Ozil's wife, managed to flee the scene, albeit with significant damage.
